Logged Out

Way down in Brazil there are acres of trees

With which local loggers can do as they please.

They bring in bulldozers, chain saws by the score,

And cut avenues twenty miles or more.

The trees tumble down with a terrible crash

And they save certain hardwoods to turn into cash,

But everything else is immediately turned

Into ash as it’s piled up and brutally burned.

What is a rainforest for?

What is a rainforest for?

For natives, it’s life, for loggers, a chore.

What is a rainforest for?

In other rain forests the chief cause of grief

Is the big North American hunger for beef.

The trees are knocked down and put to the blaze

So all the land’s pasture for cattle to graze,

But strip off the foliage that stood there before

And what you’ve got left is soil so poor

That soon, without trees, the moisture gives out

And what’s left is like riverbeds deep in a drought.

What is a rainforest for?

What is a rainforest for?

Look at one now and imagine before—

What is a rainforest for?

And when you cut down such great numbers of trees,

The ruin’s more general and spreads like disease—

The birds flee their nests and the forests grow duller

Deprived of their call and their flashes of color.

The mammals are hunted or driven away,

The insects die out in the bright light of day,

And all to make cash turning forest to lumber

To benefit only a very small number.

What is a rainforest for?

What is a rainforest for?

Unless it is good for a new penthouse floor,

What is a rainforest for?

So what’s left when forests are all cut to death

When forests are what gives the earth every breath?

When species die out who once had as much right

To live out their lives as those who brought blight?

When the general belief is that all forests do

Is provide for the comfort and wealth of a few?

And when there is nothing beneath a hot sky

But an earth which is naked and burned black and dry?

What is a rainforest for?

What is a rainforest for?

When all that is left is simply folklore,

What was a rainforest for?
