Revenants

Who are these things which feed on hate,

Pale, angry ghosts of a failed slave state?

“Don’t know them,” said Trump.

“No one knows them,” said Donald.

Who are these things who placed their hope

In branding irons and whips and rope?

“Don’t know them,” said Trump.

“No one knows them,” said Donald.

Those who lurked in fields and woods,

Now put on suits, instead of hoods.

“Don’t know them,” said Trump.

“No one knows them,” said Donald.

They change their names to hide their threat

And populate the internet.

“Don’t know them,” said Trump.

“No one knows them,” said Donald.

But, while they claim, “we’re now, not then”,

Those lurking ghosts are here again.

“Don’t know them,” said Trump.

“No one knows them,” said Donald.

And, if he’s ignorant of all,

Why do they come now, at his call?

“Don’t know them,” said Trump.

“No one knows them,” said Donald.
