Thank God I’m Poor

(for K. Williamson, Humanitarian)

Dirt poor is my middle name

But don’t feel bad ‘cause all the blame

Should fall on me. It must be Heaven’s plan

To show me by an act of grace

Just where I stand: I know my place

Is lower than the lowest common man.

Well, it’s all my fault

And the punishment’s Heaven-sent

That I should be in the 99

And not in the 1 percent.

John Calvin had it right, you know.

I’m poor because it’s meant to show

That poor is poor ‘cause I deserve to be.

The world is shaped just like it should:

The rich are rich because they’re good

And all the rest deserve their poverty.

Well, it’s all my fault

And I should be content

That I am in the 99

And not in the 1 percent.

So when you see me on the street

With my hand stretched out, you just repeat

That I am trash and so deserve my fate.

Walk right on by—that justifies

My place in life and shows the lies

Of those who wish we had a welfare state.

Since it’s all my fault

And it’s no good to repent.

I need to be in the 99

And never in the 1 percent.
